When using a hydrostatic densimeter, such as the DM 3000, it may be necessary to use a variety of different sample holders - depending on the type of sample you are testing. Is the sample a standard molded disk? Is the sample a ring, or dumbbell shape? Perhaps the sample is a material that tends to float in water. The sample holders available are designed to accommodate different shapes and materials, to make testing easy and accurate. Below are the different options of sample holders:
Standard Sample Holder with Anti-Float Bracket: The standard sample holder is made to fit the ASTM recommended disk shape typically used for density and hardness testing. It includes an anti-float bracket to prevent the sample from floating and affecting the 'in-water' weight measurement. |
Basket Sample Holder: The basket sample holder is ideal for testing materials in pellet, or chunked, form. Magnetically attached to the scale rod, the basket-type sample holder contains the pelletized samples within the wire housing to accurately determine density of the materials. |
Clip Sample Holder: The clip sample holder is useful to hold samples that are in thin strips, like the dumbbell shaped ASTM D412-C sample pictured. Thin-stripped samples may have difficulty with other sample holder methods. The clip-type specimen holder secures thin samples in place, preventing their movement during the density testing sequence. Pinch the clip base to add or remove samples after each part of the test sequence. |
Grid Sample Holder: The grid sample holder is ideal for measuring density on specialized samples that may be a finished product, or not akin to an ASTM standard. These test specimens do not fall into the category of any of the other sample holder types listed on this resource page, but must also be sized correctly to fit on the grid and lowered into the beaker. |
Needle Sample Holder: The needle sample holder can be helpful for samples that require piercing to be held in place. This can be utilized for ASTM recommended samples, sheets, or other specialized specimens unable to be attached with other sample holder methods. The needle-type holder can be removed, attached to a sample, and then magnetically re-positioned above the beaker. Please be advised that we recommend wearing safety gloves which would prevent any injury during attachment of the needle or hanging of the specimen. |
Wire Sample Holder: The wire sample holder is ideal for small samples, such as o-rings, seals, or otherwise, which may be fixed and secured with a wire. Once attached, the samples are lowered into the bath and density measurement proceeds. |
